Board members

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise's performance and strategic direction are overseen by a board of private and public sector directors appointed by the Government.

There are also two special advisors to the Board: Simon Murdoch, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and David Smol, Chief Executive of the Ministry of Economic Development.

  • Jon Mayson

    Jon Mayson

    Chair

    Jon Mayson was the CEO of the Port of Tauranga Limited from 1997 to 2005 and concurrently CEO of Northport Ltd from 2001 to 2004, as well as serving as a director of associated companies in logistics and port related industries. 
     
    Jon came from a Merchant Navy background, as a master mariner, before he took on a marine operations role as a pilot at the Port of Tauranga. This was followed by a role in operational management before becoming Chief Executive Officer. Since 2006 he has been a professional director and consultant and currently chairs the boards of several private companies involved in manufactured exports and logistics. His consultancy work in New Zealand and offshore has been focused around port privatisation and transport logistics. He is a past president of Export New Zealand, a Fellow of the Institute of Management, a member of the Institute of Directors, and has an MBA in International Management. He was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) in the 2006 New Year Honours list. Jon joined the NZTE Board in February 2008 and became Chair in April 2008.

  • Julie Christie

    Julie Christie

    Julie Christie is the founder and CEO of Eyeworks New Zealand and Australia, formerly known as Touchdown Productions. She formed the television production company in 1991 and sold it to Dutch media group, Eyeworks, in early 2006.
     
    Julie was the first Australasian entertainment producer to break into the lucrative United States market and has achieved most of her international success with unscripted formats including The Chair, Miss Popularity and Treasure Island. The company’s formats, most of which were first aired in New Zealand, have been licensed to 30 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Iraq.
     
    After a long career in unscripted television, Julie produced her first television drama, Burying Brian and executive-produced her first feature film, The Tattooist. Julie also owns Sky’s Living and Food channels and a resort in Fiji.
     
    The mother of two is the recipient of the 2004 Women in Film and Television Award for International Achievement, the 2006 SPADA Independent Producer of the Year, the 2008 Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of The Year, and was last year made an Officer of The New Zealand Order of Merit.

  • Peter Conway

    Peter Conway

    Peter Conway (MA Hons, BCA) is Secretary with the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions. He was previously CTU Economist and Director of Policy. He has been involved in a number of trade areas including the Doha round and union submissions on FTAs. Other relevant areas of work include productivity, innovation, economic development, industry training, and industry strategies.

  • Craig Ellison

    Craig Ellison

    Craig Ellison is a professional director on a number of boards, including Airways Corporation, NIWA, Absolute Foods and Foodstuffs Fresh, as well as serving on a number of Australian boards. Craig has been an active participant in the New Zealand fishing industry and was both a director of Aotearoa Fisheries and Deputy Chair of the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission. Craig has been the President of the New Zealand Fishing Industry Association, a member of the Fishing Industry Board and is Chair of the New Zealand Seafood Standards Council.
     
    Of Ngai Tahu descent, Craig maintains a keen interest in Maori resource management and governance issues.
     
    Craig was on the previous Trade New Zealand Board.

  • Charles Finny

    Charles Finny

    Charles Finny has been CEO of the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce since early 2005.  Prior to this he had 22 years experience in international trade, economics and diplomacy having served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Department of Trade and Industry and the Prime Minister's Department. He has lived in Singapore, Beijing and Taipei.

    Charles is on the Board of New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, the New Zealand Film Commission, New Zealand Chambers of Commerce Inc., the New Zealand International Business Forum, and Kawarau Estate Limited. 
     
    Charles is a member of the Victoria University of Wellington Council and an appointed member of the Wellington Regional Council’s Regional Transport Committee.  He also chairs the Local Government Forum and the Advisory Board of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre.

    Charles is a graduate of Victoria University having studied and tutored at the University in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He has also studied at the National University of Singapore.

    Charles has an active interest in small and medium sized enterprises and the challenges confronting these. He and his wife Wendy Hinton have developed their own export business - Kawarau Estate in Central Otago. The winery produces a range of award winning wine, focusing particularly on Pinot Noir. The wines are exported to the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan and Korea.

  • Peter Townsend

    Peter Townsend

    Peter Townsend is the Chief Executive of the Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce and has held that position since 1996. The Employers’ Chamber has over 3,000 members and concentrates on assisting members to improve their enterprises, ensuring members can operate in a business friendly environment, and encouraging new levels of business activity.
     
    Peter holds several corporate directorships and is involved with a range of community groups and initiatives in this region that are in harmony with the objectives of the Employers’ Chamber.
     
    Peter is the Honorary Consul for Chile for the South Island, a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of the Institute of Management.  Peter has a BSc (Hons) and a post Graduate Diploma in Business.

  • Lorraine Witten

    Lorraine Witten

    Lorraine Witten (BMS Hons, CA) has 20 years experience in a range of senior management, finance and director roles.
     
    Lorraine was General Manager of Telecom Mobile until 2002 and then Executive Chairman and major shareholder of telecommunications company CallSouth, which was sold to TrustPower in 2007.
     
    Lorraine is currently a Director of Kordia Limited, Chairman of Sapphire Currency Fund, Director of a number of private companies and Managing Director of Simply Security Limited.
