Senior management

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise is led by a senior management team, led by Tim Gibson, Chief Executive. Bios of the team members can be found below.

    Tim Gibson

    Chief Executive

    Tim took over as chief executive of the newly established NZTE in July 2003. Before joining NZTE, Tim held senior positions in the New Zealand dairy industry, both domestically and internationally.

    Tim has degrees in German Literature and Law and has studied at several overseas business schools.

  • Gareth Chaplin

    Gareth Chaplin

    Chief Economist

    Gareth joined NZTE in September 2007. Before that he worked at Treasury, where his roles included manager of the international economics team and managing the land and natural resources area.
     
    Gareth has represented New Zealand interests at APEC Finance Ministers’ and the Pacific Forum Finance Ministers’ Process, and the World Bank, the IMF and the Asia Development Bank.
     
    Gareth has a background in Government policy, fiscal management, and organisational development.

  • Cheryl Crooks

    Cheryl Crooks

    Group General Manager, Strategy and Capability

    Cheryl is responsible for the development and implementation of the NZTE Human Resources Strategy as well as managing key relationships with people and organisations key to the ongoing success of NZTE.

    Cheryl has had an extensive career in human resource management. She was the director of human resources for NZTE, and previously the human resources manager at Industry New Zealand. Before that, Cheryl worked at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Fisheries, where she was the human resources manager.

    Cheryl has been involved in human resources work since she graduated from Victoria University, with a Degree in English literature and art history.

  • Peter Lennox

    Peter Lennox

    Group General Manager, Operations

    Peter joined NZTE from Industry New Zealand at the time of the merger with Trade New Zealand in July 2003. He was Industry New Zealand’s biotechnology sector director.
     
    From 1999 to 2002, Peter was the director of biotechnology networks for Scottish Enterprise, the national economic development agency of Scotland. He has also spent five years in New York working for Scotland’s Foreign Direct Investment Agency; headed-up Scottish Trade International (STI), the United Kingdom government export agency; and had extensive private sector experience working in the food and beverage sector.

    Peter has scientific Degrees from Queens, Ireland; and Heriot Watt, Edinburgh, as well as a Master of Business Administration from Glasgow University.

  • Rod Mackenzie

    Rod MacKenzie

    Group General Manager, North Asia

    Rod joined NZTE from Trade New Zealand in July 2003. During his time at Trade New Zealand he held roles as senior trade commissioner for North America, general manager marketing and eBusiness and acting CEO for six months before the merger with Industry New Zealand. Before joining Trade New Zealand in 1996, Rod was the inaugural chief executive of The New Zealand Way. Rod has also had many years experience in the private sector as a director and senior public relations and marketing consultant.

  • Grant McPherson

    Grant McPherson

    Group General Manager, Business Solutions

    Grant was previously based in Singapore as NZTE's Regional Director for South/Southeast Asia.

    Grant has extensive experience assisting New Zealand firms to internationalise and develop relationships with key stakeholders at national and international levels. Prior to joining NZTE, Grant was Managing Director of a boutique investment bank focused on high growth New Zealand companies. He has also worked as Vice President of Consulting Services in Southeast Asia for an international management consulting firm.

    Grant holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration from Victoria University and a Master of Business Administration from Cranfield Institute of Technology in the United Kingdom.

  • Julian Moore

    Julian Moore

    Group General Manager, Corporate Services

    Julian has a background in financial services and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (United Kingdom). His early career was with Midland Bank in the United Kingdom where he held a number of roles in retail and commercial banking before moving into marketing in 1988.
     
    He emigrated to New Zealand in 1991 and has held the roles of Marketing Director of Prudential New Zealand, General Manager Marketing of Colonial New Zealand, and General Manager Marketing of AXA New Zealand. He was a director of both Prudential and Colonial’s New Zealand operations.

    Julian joined Industry New Zealand in 2002 and was appointed General Manager Marketing for NZTE on its formation in 2003. He took over responsibility for Corporate Services (Finance, Information Technology, Property and Legal Services) in early 2005.

  • Jack Stephens

    Jack Stephens

    Group General Manager, International

    Jack has had extensive international business experience working as a trade commissioner in Melbourne, Suva, and Jakarta. In 1994 he was appointed Regional Manager for the Middle East and established Trade New Zealand’s office in Dubai.
     
    On his return to New Zealand in 1997, Jack became General Manager responsible for Trade New Zealand’s international operations in Asia and Australia/Pacific, and in 2001 was appointed General Manager responsible for the operations of Trade New Zealand’s global network of 38 offices. After the merger of Trade New Zealand and Industry New Zealand, Jack continued to manage the offshore network until his appointment to his current role.
