Direct access to many of NZTE’s services and programmes
As a New Zealand business, you can access a large number of NZTE’s services and programmes directly. You won’t need advice or assistance from an NZTE account manager to access or act on much of the information on this website, or to register or apply for many of our programmes and services.
If you have identified an NZTE service or programme that you would like to take up, simply check that you meet the eligibility criteria for entry and follow the instructions for application or registration.
If the information relating to the service or programme states that it can only be accessed via an NZTE account manager, and your business already has an assigned NZTE account manager, you should discuss your interest with them.
If your business does not have an assigned NZTE account manager, please read the information in the section below on NZTE account management.
Access to services that require an NZTE account manager
As a publicly funded organisation, NZTE has to make best use of resources, which are necessarily limited. As such, some of NZTE’s programmes and services (for example, NZTE’s Offshore Services, the Beachheads programme and the Better by Design programme) are not automatically available to all New Zealand businesses regardless of their stage of development. They can only be accessed with the advice and assistance of an NZTE account manager.
In determining whether or not to allocate individual account management resource to a business and, through that, the potential to access these programmes, NZTE will consider a number of factors including:
- the track record, detailed current capability and strategic aims of the business
- the likelihood that the use of NZTE resources for the business will result in significant and ongoing net returns to New Zealand’s economy
- the degree to which NZTE’s specific interventions are likely to add value and whether or not they can be substituted by other organisations or means.
Criteria we look at before providing access to an account manager
If your business does not yet have an NZTE account manager (or you have been out of regular contact with NZTE for a long period), we would be interested in hearing from you. However, access to individual account management resource is not automatic, and we would expect to discuss your business in significant detail in order to be able to properly consider this.
During that discussion, we will have a strong interest in gaining an understanding of your:
- business model and your products or services
- current markets and channels to market
- financial track record with detailed figures for the past two financial years
- strategic goals and growth ambitions
- documented plans to achieve the above
- capital adequacy and ability to execute plans
- intellectual property and IP strategy
- capacity and ability to scale up production
- research and development activities
- target markets, together with information on research already undertaken, and your rationale for selecting markets
- governance, succession planning and exit strategy.
At the same time, we’ll be interested in hearing about things that are proving to be barriers to growth, and specific areas in which you consider NZTE’s intervention will be likely to make a significant difference to your business.
Businesses that follow less standard developmental models
We recognise that some businesses do not conform to general business developmental models – for instance, hi-tech start-ups that have developed their own intellectual property and that are at the pre-revenue stage; or businesses with highly specialised niche technology, for which the New Zealand market does not offer a feasible opportunity to develop scale.
If this describes your business, we are also interested in hearing from you. We are keen to understand your opportunities and the level of innovation you are seeking to commercialise.
