Our history

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) was established in 2003, when Trade New Zealand and Industry New Zealand were merged.

Our history

Trade New Zealand was the Government’s trade promotion agency and Industry New Zealand was the Government’s economic development agency. The merger was a response to feedback from New Zealand companies and other stakeholders who wanted a single organisation to co-ordinate delivery of flexible and responsive services to businesses, from start-ups to internationally competitive companies.

As New Zealand’s economic development agency, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise supports the Government's goals of lifting productivity and growing the New Zealand economy to deliver greater prosperity, security and opportunities for all New Zealanders.

Given the small size of the domestic economy, a greater proportion of New Zealand's wealth needs to be generated from exports if we are to improve overall living standards.

NZTE provides a range of services to support the growth of New Zealand businesses.

NZTE pursues three strategic goals:

  • improving New Zealand’s business environment for enterprise and growth
  • increasing the international connections of New Zealand businesses
  • building New Zealand business capability.

For more information about our strategy and the progress made, download the Statement of Intent and the Annual Report from Our corporate documents.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise is a Crown Entity governed under the Crown Entities Act 2004 and the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Act 2003.
