New Zealand Trade and Enterprise’s regional managers lead seven regional teams that deliver NZTE programmes and services to businesses around the country and manage our relationships with regional business and government organisations.
Regional Manager, Tauranga
Lionel is NZTE’s Regional Manager in Tauranga and is responsible for NZTE’s engagement in the Bay of Plenty region with Pipeline clients, local business and economic development agencies. Originally a high school teacher, Lionel took a break from teaching in 1979 and has never looked back. He spent five years in Wellington with the Department of Trade and Industry from 1980 and in 1985 was posted to The Netherlands as Assistant Trade Commissioner covering the Benelux countries and Scandinavia. After travelling for a year in 1990, Lionel returned to New Zealand and managed the Commerce Act team for the Commerce Commission in Auckland for two years. One of Lionel's goals was to join an export company, and in 1992 he was appointed to the management team for the electric fencing company, Precision Electronics Ltd (PEL). After a few years he took over as Export Manager and managed PEL's export growth in to Europe, Australia, and North and South America. In 1999 Lionel moved to Tauranga as the regional representative for one of NZTE’s predecessor organisations, Trade New Zealand. This role has evolved into his current position. Lionel holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Political Science and can still hold a conversation in Dutch.
