New global business trends

Innovation, market forces and international investment flows drive changes within defined industries and new ways of doing business are emerging in response.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise works to identify these trends at an early stage, exposing New Zealand companies to new opportunities and business models.

Read below for more information about some of the trends and models NZTE has identified for further investigation.

Healthcare

New Zealand’s strengths and expertise in industries such as biotechnology, ICT and specialised manufacturing provide the backdrop for the country’s growing reputation in health solutions. Specialist areas include bioactives (functional ingredients, nutraceuticals and supplements), health IT, medical technologies and medical research.

Sustainability

There is strong and growing demand for goods and services which are produced using sustainable processes – both overseas and in New Zealand. Much of the business focus on sustainability has been driven by concerns about the environment, including climate change, biodiversity, and water usage. Government and business action on climate change has created a market for rights to emit greenhouse gases, often referred to as the carbon market.

Clean technology

NZTE is compiling information about New Zealand’s capabilities and competitive advantages in clean technology, an industry which is experiencing strong investment growth internationally.

Halal

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) has identified halal as an emerging global trend that holds great promise for New Zealand’s food and beverage, cosmetics and beauty products.

Productivity improvements

New Zealand’s businesses are not always as productive as their international competitors. NZTE is expanding work it has done with New Zealand manufacturers across other industries to help businesses improve the way they do business – from idea generation through to commercialisation and international success.

Emerging technology

New Zealand technology exporters are usually smaller than their competitors and can be constrained by a narrow product offering. NZTE is helping businesses in the geospatial, payments, agritechnology and broadband industries to identify opportunities for collaboration to improve their international positioning. NZTE is also assessing opportunities for New Zealand to take advantage of its developing strengths in new technology areas such as titanium alloy powder and high temperature superconductors.

Food, beverage and agriculture

New Zealand’s food, beverage and agricultural industries are globally recognised for their high quality as well as their safe and efficient production methods.  NZTE is working with the primary sector (from agritechnology through to high value specialty foods) to encourage a market-led approach to product development, in-market infrastructure development and investment; and to encourage collaborative activity where appropriate.  This includes supporting international marketing activities to secure loyalty to a strong New Zealand brand.

Wool

New Zealand is a producer of premium quality wool and has a number of competitive advantages in innovation, research, design and manufacturing across wool-based textiles and apparel. NZTE is working with the industry to improve economic returns by changing the industry value chain to emphasise the premium quality of New Zealand wool and by taking advantage of growing global demand for sustainable materials and processes. The aim is to capture greater market share and opportunities in growing lifestyle-driven global markets for the New Zealand wool industry.

Entertainment

New Zealand is internationally recognised for producing high quality creative content. NZTE is working with New Zealand’s content industries to help develop partnerships with key players and participate in global markets. This includes building greater industry capability around content development and through the integration of innovative technology and digital content across sectors.
