Information and communication technologies

New Zealand’s information and communication technologies (ICT) industry includes areas as diverse as wireless infrastructure, health IT, digital content, payments, geospatial, telecommunications and agricultural technology.

Information and communication technologies (LOMAK)

The ICT industry contributes around $8 billion to the economy each year and employs approximately 40,000 people.

According to Statistics New Zealand’s ICT Supply Survey (2006/2007):

    • Total sales of ICT goods and services were valued at $18.2 billion
    • Of this, 92 percent were sold domestically, with the rest exported
    • Telecommunications and program distribution remains the most significant ICT commodity and electronic devices and equipment are the highest-value export commodity

Notable New Zealand ICT industry’s successes include:

    • The United States Democratic party’s Convention website was built using a content management system developed by Wellington-based SilverStripe.
    • A key component of Boeing’s 3D engine repair tool is produced by Right Hemisphere.
    • Over 50 percent of the frequency control devices used by the GPS industry worldwide are supplied by Rakon

    The global ICT opportunity

In mid-2008, the global ICT market was valued at $US 3.8 trillion, with spending by governments and businesses accounting for 70 percent of the total. It is not yet clear what impact the global economic crisis will have on the ICT market, although most market analysis is predicting at least moderate growth to continue. The top five ICT markets at the end of 2008 were the United States, Japan, China, Germany and the United Kingdom.

How NZTE can help ICT companies

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) works closely with companies and industry organisations to build capability and competitiveness across the sector and to create an environment in which New Zealand ICT companies can become world-class businesses. We also look to measure which areas of increase in ICT uptake lift productivity throughout the economy.

We use our international networks to identify niche market opportunities, help companies to enter and develop offshore markets and develop a global presence.

Much of our focus is on helping ICT companies establish and grow in key markets through programmes such as Path to Market and Beachheads, and through promotional and business development activities in key markets such as Europe and the United Kingdom, North America and Australia.
