The cleantech opportunity

The cleantech industry is experiencing rapid global growth, with investment in renewable energy surpassing conventional energy projects for the first time in 2008. Roland Berger Strategy Consultants estimate that the global market for environmental products and services will double from US$1,370 billion (1.37 trillion) in 2008 to US$2,740 billion (2.74 trillion) by 2020.

Cleantech is also the largest area of activity within the economic stimulus packages of the United States, China and Korea. In total for the G20 countries - US$396 billion in stimulus funding is going towards green investments.

Taking advantage of the global cleantech opportunity

New Zealand is well positioned to take advantage of the global transition towards clean technology. We have abundant resources for renewable energy, smart ideas and the engineering and scientific capability to deliver cost effective cleantech solutions.

New Zealand generates 65 to 70 percent of its electricity through renewable energy sources – mostly hydro, geothermal, wind, and a small amount from biomass. This experience has resulted in a wealth of cleantech innovation and technical expertise.

Some of the country’s strongest offerings are in:

  • renewable energy
  • energy efficiency
  • waste and wastewater management
  • nanotechnologies
  • transportation
  • sustainable agriculture

There are a number of New Zealand cleantech firms achieving international success such as DesignLine, SKM, Wellington Drive, and Flotech. Market demand for these technologies and services is growing strongly.

How NZTE can help cleantech businesses

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) aims to advance the development and deployment of clean technologies, driving sustainability and delivering revenue from new markets. To achieve this we:

  • help build and promote New Zealand’s cleantech capability and presence in targeted international markets. This includes establishing New Zealand’s presence at events and in-market missions, and helping position New Zealand as a regional leader in specific clean technology sectors.
  • help local companies build industry capability to prepare them for international cleantech opportunities, collaborations and promotion
  • facilitate foreign and domestic investment to develop and commercialise clean technology
  • assist New Zealand energy companies to invest offshore
  • commission reports to identify the value of New Zealand’s cleantech industry and drivers that will propel New Zealand towards a clean economy vision (the reports will be available on this site soon).
