Intellectual property: Invention disclosures

An Invention Disclosure form serves as an official document in the process of evaluating, protecting and initiating commercialisation of an invention or new technology.  They are signed by the inventor in front of witnesses, and background the development of the invention as well as giving a detailed description of it.

The first part of the form should contain the following information:

  • Title and invention record number
  • Name, address and citizenship of the inventor
  • A timeline including the date the invention was conceived, when and where it was first disclosed and to whom, the date of first drawings and the first written description
  • Experimental testing – when, where and the results
  • Prior disclosure – when, where and to whom
  • Prior commercial use – when, where and results
  • Plans for use, sale or disclosure to the public

The second part of the form should address the following questions:

  • Purpose of the invention
  • Prior art – closest patents, publications, prior uses, work of others and whether it is known to inventors
  • Novelty
  • Advantages – new features or how the invention improves on existing similar inventions or technologies

Finally, the form should include a detailed description of the invention and how it works. Where appropriate, attach and refer to relevant drawings and graphs. If the invention involves processes, give the steps, ranges, ratio of reactants, temperatures, pressure, times or other process variables.
