Sustainable transport and logistics
Today an increasing number of products and services are distributed online. But this is not without environmental cost, as well as risks from service breakdowns.
Traditional air and sea transport is a major consumer of limited fossil fuels and cause of greenhouse gas emissions. As such it is becoming more susceptible to sudden cost increases and possible breakdowns.
You can protect your supply chain by co-operating with couriers and transporters on initiatives like:
- consolidating shipments to avoid wasted vehicle space this may require a system where customers order earlier
- ensuring transport routes are the most efficient possible using Global Positioning Systems, electronic vehicle monitoring and online route finding
- analysing the efficiency of your transport network considering production and distribution locations and their transport links to major markets
- upgrading vehicles to more fuel-efficient models where possible and/or encouraging partners to do likewise
- switch road shipments to rail wherever possible
Contracts with transporters can include clauses covering these issues.
