Liquidmetal is reported to be a super tough alloy and has been touted as a revolutionary new manufacturing technique.
“Scientists at Caltech and Liquidmetal Technologies developed a technology where metals behave similarly to plastics. This new class of alloys is called Liquidmetal due to its amorphous or liquid atomic structure,” according to Liquidmetal’s website.
“The alloys combine over twice the strength of titanium with the processing efficiency of plastics.”
The Liquidmetal alloy might prove significant as Apple moves to crafting more of its devices out of a single piece of metal, PCMag.com said.
Disclosure documents filed by Liquidmetal with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) stated that Liquidmetal had entered into a Master Transaction Agreement with Apple in which Liquidmetal contributed substantially all of its intellectual property assets to a newly organised special-purpose, wholly-owned subsidiary (IP Company).
“The IP Company will grant to Apple a perpetual, worldwide, fully-paid, exclusive license to commercialise such intellectual property in the field of consumer electronic products in exchange for a license fee,” the SEC filing said.
“And the IP Company will grant back to Liquidmetal a perpetual, worldwide, fully-paid, exclusive license to commercialise such intellectual property in all other fields of use.”
