Citing data from the Swedish Bioenergy Association (Svebio), RenewableEnergyFocus.com said that bioenergy represented 31.7 percent of the final energy use, compared to 30.8 percent for oil.
According to Svebio, the country’s total share of renewable energy as defined by the EU’s renewable energy directive was 46.3 percent in 2009 – well ahead of the EU target trajectory, and only 3.7 percent short of the EU target of 49 percent in 2020.
“The major renewable energy source beside bioenergy in Sweden is hydropower. Wind power is still a relatively small contributor to the energy supply,” RenewableEnergyFocus.com said.
Bioenergy is the primary energy source used in Sweden’s residential heating sector and supplies more than half of the total heat demand.
Over 5 percent of transport fuels in Sweden are biofuels.
