MEXICO CITY: Protection of Intellectual Property (IP) was a key factor behind Canadian companies choosing Mexico over China as an investment destination, according to local media.
Bombardier, which manufacturers executive jets, and Research in Motion (RIM), maker of the BlackBerry reportedly established production plants in Mexico instead of China due in part to greater certainty over IP protection.
“Bombardier and RIM are here and not in China, and that means that Mexico has the status of intellectual property protection, which gives businessmen peace of mind,” Rosalind Wilson, President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Mexico was reported as saying.
“Besides intellectual property, investors in Mexico also derive advantages from the country’s infrastructure and a qualified, cost effective labour pool.”
