In an interview with eHealthEurope.net, Iakovidis said that the digitisation of healthcare was already well under way in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
“The European eHealth market is currently estimated at around €15 billion and growing at an annual rate of 2.9 percent. Given the growth of the home market, European companies are well positioned to become leading providers of eHealth technologies worldwide,” Iakovidis told eHealthEurope.net.
“The key to success will be business models that acknowledge the needs of practitioners in day-to-day professional activities.”
Iakovidis said healthcare was being confronted with a situation where an increasing number of patients would request an increasing number of expensive therapies in the context of decreasing or, at best, stable healthcare budgets.
“This is where eHealth comes into play. The provision of healthcare services using innovative ICT can help contain healthcare delivery costs while maintaining or even increasing quality of care and patient safety,” eHealthEurope.net reported Iakovidis as saying.
