PARIS: As part of the Grenelle de l’Environnement’ programme the implementation of 'eco' labelling in France will start from 1st July in retail stores.
The labelling system hopes to reflect the impact on the environment in terms of carbon emissions, water supply and biodiversity.
The aim is to raise consumer awareness of the impact of their purchases on the environment, and also to force companies to better analyse the lifecycle of their products.
Over 150 companies have agreed to be pioneers, including Colgate, Coca Cola, Intermarché, H&M and Henkel.
At the same time, ADEME, French Agency of the Environment, and AFNOR, French Agency for Normalization, are progressively designing standards to delimit what has to be taken into account and the ways to do it.
The next step will consist in generalising this labelling after what is considered a one year experimental process.
