French public hospitals downsize workforce

PARIS: French public hospitals underwent a dramatic reduction in its workforce in 2009, French media reported.

According to the French newspaper Les Echos, 9,800 jobs (excluding general practitioners) were cut in 2009, a 1.3 percent reduction in the overall workforce to its 2005 level despite a 13 percent surge in activity.

Technical and maintenance staff bore the brunt of the cuts, with the number of nurses remaining stable while doctor numbers increased.

Citing the French Federation of Hospitals, Les Echos reported that the decrease in head count numbers for 2010, which have yet to be released, could reach 15,000 jobs.

NZTE Paris anticipates that gain of efficiency will be key in French hospitals from now on and hospitals will be looking with interest at means of “doing more with less” through better use of technology.
