BERLIN: The German government is scrutinising the country’s next steps on nuclear energy, German news website www.Faz.net reported.
“Public opinion against nuclear power in Germany has always been high and the government’s decision to extend the lifespan of reactors and even build new ones was seen as succumbing to strong lobbying pressure by powerful companies,” Faz.net said.
“The findings of the two new commissions (set up to look at safety aspects and contingency plans of the existing plants and the ethics of using nuclear power) will affect the government’s next steps on nuclear energy.”
According to Faz.net, a key factor the German government would be taking into consideration was what would be an alternative to nuclear power should atomic energy be phased out faster than originally intended.
“Regardless of the outcome, the profile for renewable energy has been raised even further in recent weeks and real opportunities for companies with solutions in this area will come from this,” faz.net said.
