HAMBURG: IBM has launched the next evolution of the patient portal, increasing the sorts of information, alerts, recommendations and interactive mentoring healthcare providers can offer to communicate with their patients online.
The IBM Patient Empowerment System offers greater functionality than simply allowing patients to make appointments online or access a personal health record. Using new technology developed by IBM Research, the new portal helps patients better manage their own medical profiles.
Hospitals or clinics can host the system, allowing doctors and patients to sign in and take advantage of services that prevent harmful drug interactions, send alerts for medical problems, examine genetic profiles to prevent over- or under-dosage of mediation.
The IBM Patient Empowerment System came about as a result of collaboration among three IBM centres around the world: the IBM Ubiquitous Computing Laboratory in Korea, IBM Research – Haifa, and IBM Research – China.
