Korean handsets a viable competitor to iPhone, Blackberry

SEOUL: Korean handset makers are set to boost their market share against leaders like Apple and Research In Motion, according to analysts interviewed by Channel News Asia.

Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's Blackberry are currently two of the leading products in the smart phone market.

However analysts told Channel News Asia that a key advantage of the Korean handset makers was their multi-platform strategy and close collaboration with component manufacturers, helping to reduce costs.

"iPhone has set the pace, the benchmark for others to follow, and we see Samsung as being a very aggressive fast follower trying to keep up with the pace of innovation where other established players have momentarily fallen off the pace,” Gartner research director Foong King Yew told Channel News Asia.

"The key innovation going forward is for smart phones to become true multi-media devices - be it e-readers applications, media and entertainment, music or games.”

However analysts warned that challenges remained to Korean handsets supplanting the Apple’s iPhone, including the lack of services like application and online music stores.

“To gain market share, it will be important for the likes of Samsung and LG to partner with other platform providers such as Google's Android operating system,” analysts told Channel News Asia.
