Lessons from India’s business leaders

NEW DELHI: India's business leaders have a very different approach to leadership from their Western counterparts, according to research published by the Harvard Business Review.

"In terms of lessons for managers elsewhere, one of the most important things is that Indian leaders lead with a sense of social purpose," CNN reported Peter Cappelli, one of the researchers behind the study as saying.

Cappelli told CNN that every leader interviewed gave a specific social purpose as being the goal of their business, ranging from improving healthcare in India to proving to the international community that Indian companies could be world leaders in IT.

"Having a social purpose really motivates workers and can have real benefits."

Indian companies have a strong emphasis on investing in human capital, the study discovered, while US firms have largely abandoned investing in employees.

Indian IT firms typically allocate 60 days of formal training for new employees, CNN said, citing data from the study.

"Indian companies take smart, motivated people, really engage them, invest in them, and let them come up with out of the box solutions, “Cappelli told CNN.
