MEXICO CITY: Mexico was the world’s fifth largest meat producer in 2010, according to South American business publication Emid Digest.
Mexico’s annual production of chicken (2.6 million tons), beef (1.7 million tons), and pig (1.2 million tons) makes it the world’s 26th largest global exporter of meat, the publication said, citing data from Mexico’s National Association of Federal Inspection Facilities.
The country is reportedly nonth place in terms of global pork exports, bringing in approximately US$250 million of revenue annually.
“The main export destinations for pork are Japan (84.3 percent), United States (10 percent) and Korea (6 percent),” Emid Digest said.
“Mexico’s national inventory for cattle stands at 30 million heads, and cattle exports bring in US$170 million dollars annually, with the majority of exports going to the US, Japan and Korea.”
