LONDON: New scanning equipment specially developed to test for liquids is being tested in airports across the European Union in a move that could see restrictions on travelling with cosmetics removed within a year.
The existing rules, which have been in force in European Union and other airports worldwide since a trans-Atlantic bombing plot was uncovered in 2006, restrict passengers from carrying in hand luggage liquid - or gel-based personal care products, unless they are below a specific size limit (100ml in the European Union).
Cosmetics industry players claim these measures have impacted their businesses, particularly in the luxury duty-free segment.
The new equipment being tested can reportedly be used to determine the difference between standard cosmetics ingredients and potentially dangerous ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide or liquid nitroglycerin.
