Next steps for Australia’s Healthcare Identifiers Act

CANBERRA: Australia’s Healthcare Identifiers Act 2010 was passed on June 29 2010 to provide a national implementation framework for supporting e-health initiatives by linking consumers and practitioners within a defined privacy setting.

A 16 digit patient identifier has been applied to every Australian consumer in the Medicare database, but may be many months away from being extended to Australian medical practitioners.

It may also be some time before significant benefits are seen, as further legislation will be required to implement electronic health records in Australia.
