VANCOUVER: Consumer appetite for farmed salmon is increasing, with sales accounting for over half of total fresh fish sales in California where exports from British Colombia have a growing presence.
Fish farming has become a significant industry for coastal communities in British Columbia, exporting more than $350 million worth of farmed salmon primarily to the United States.
To promote farmed salmon and educate consumers on their salmon farming practices, British Columbian’s salmon farmers are using mixed media campaigns to direct consumers to their website, www.bcsalmonfacts.ca.
This growth is rapidly altering earlier negative attitudes towards farmed salmon, offering more opportunity to New Zealand producers as the market grows.
