Turkey needs investment into new generation plants and to increase efficiency in its current energy generation portfolio.
To bring in new investors, the Turkish government is currently undergoing a program of privatisation for generation, transmission and distribution in the energy sector.
The move towards privatisation and the urgent need to update or exchange obsolete technology and infrastructure are the main drivers for change in the country’s energy sector.
The current situation in Turkey is ideal for new entrants into the market and offers many opportunities for technology companies and for consultancies in the energy sector.
Turkey is currently dependant on gas fired power plants for power generation. Approximately 51 percent of domestic generation capacity already been privatised and there is more to come.
There is a recognition within Turkey for the need to develop renewable energy sources – hydroelectric, geothermal, biogas, wind and solar – and there are many projects of all sizes under discussion and in preparation.
Turkey’s energy market has a need for engineering and consultancy capabilities in the areas of site evaluation, technical and economical feasibility studies, engineering capability and commercial experience in site development, as well as specific technologies used in the plants – biogas upgrading, turbines for hydroelectric, wind turbines.
The government owned national grid will be tendered for privatisation in April.
The current system needs urgent updating and there will be a number of opportunities on the control system and the energy network side once the new owner has been defined.
