Peruvian food companies look to new products

LIMA: Agri-business Green Peru is exploring new products such as avocados, citrus fruit and pomegranates to cope with falling sales.

The company is open to new cultivars.

Its exports of white and green asparagus and artichoke cores were worth US$21 million in 2008 compared with US$13 million up to August 2009.

The largest producer of canned vegetables in Peru, Sociedad Agricola Viru is also looking to overcome falling sales by launching new products such as white asparagus, artichokes, fresh peppers, processed foods and buschetas.

It requires watering systems, seeds and cultivation consulting services.

Viru cultivates 2700 hectares of asparagus, 2000 of artichokes and 500 hectares of pepper. Its main clients are in the United States, Australia, Denmark, Netherlands, Venezuela and Chile.
