LONDON: A proposed ‘super dairy’ in Wales is drawing criticism for ‘factory farming’ conditions from animal welfare charity Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) and concerned locals.
Plans include a multi-storey parlour for a herd of 1,000 cattle that would be inside for 250 days per year. Following on from a recent proposal for a similar herd in Lincolnshire, the plans are drawing criticism in the media for an ‘American-style’ move towards super dairies.
Some are also pointing to similarities to battery hen and battery pig conditions, that have suffered from high-profile celebrity campaigns.
