Research outlines damage to British retail sector

LONDON: Shopping centres, department stores and fashion and footwear were among the retail sectors hardest hit by the recession, according to research by retail researchers, Local Data Company.

Overall, one in 10 retailers closed their doors between January and September this year based on a survey of 251,462 firms in more than 705 centres in the United Kingdom.

Hardest hit were department stores, mail order and shopping centres with more than 21 percent closing over the nine month period. In fashion and footwear, 17.9 percent of women’s wear and children’s wear stores shut up shop.

The sectors that did best included chemists, grocers and supermarkets.
