A document released by the Spanish government predicted that energy from renewable sources by 2020 would be the equivalent of 27.9 million tonnes of petroleum, up from 11.96 million tonnes in 2009.
“The (Spanish) government forecast shows that renewables will have a 22.7 percent share by 2020, up from 12.5 percent in 2009,” Reuters reported.
“Most of the increase is expected to come from Spain's already booming wind and solar power sectors.”
The EU has set a target of 20 percent for renewable power by 2020.
Wind power will become Spain’s greatest single energy source, meeting 22 percent of electricity supply in 2020, up from 14 percent in 2009, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Solar energy is expected to meet 8 percent of the country’s electricity needs by 2020.
Despite ambitious forecast for the renewable energy sector, the Wall Street Journal warned that the Spanish government is expected to revise incentives for renewable energy by end of 2010.
