UK’s Majestic achieves good profits

LONDON: Majestic Wine recorded profit growth of 9 percent in the six months to 28 September, 2009 with United Kingdom like-for-like sales rising 6 percent.

The United Kingdom’s biggest retailer specialising in sales of wine by the mixed case has 153 outlets and claims to see potential for “at least 250 locations” in the United Kingdom.

Online sales rose 24.6 percent amounting to 9.2 percent of turnover.

Other highlights include:

  • sales to private customers up 8.9 percent
  • sales to business customers down 6.9 percent
  • sales of fine wine continued to increase, with sales of still wine priced at £20 and above increasing by 14.4 percent on last year
  • average bottle of still wine purchased at Majestic is now £6.41 (2008: £6.19).
