US airport screening systems ‘not well tested’

WASHINGTON: The United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does not know if its airport passenger screening systems effectively address the greatest threats to aviation, according to a report from the United States Government Accounting Office.

A closer look at the report may indicate areas where New Zealand companies could potentially fill gaps.

Risk assessments of “threat, vulnerability and consequence” were not completed before the installation of the screening systems, so there is no “reasonable assurance that technologies will perform as intended," said House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson.

He said the issue raised questions about the soundness of TSA's strategic planning and whether it will minimise government waste.
