US budget for Guam move still on target

WASHINGTON: Funding for the planned move of thousands of United States Marines from Okinawa to Guam has been delayed due to the focus on healthcare reform, not because of tensions between the United States and Japan, according to the United States Department of Interior (DOI).

This will come as a relief to companies planning to target infrastructure opportunities in Guam.

An article in Japan Today had indicated that 70 percent of the budget for the planned move would be cut. The total budget is more than US$700 million.

However, a DOI spokesperson reported that the information was incorrect and that the DOI and Guam Representative Madeleine Bordallo’s office are confident that the funding will come through.
