VANCOUVER: Hot on the heels of Target’s acquisition of one of Canada’s largest retailers, Zellers, Wal-Mart and other major US chains have announced expansion plans into Canada as well.
Wal-Mart has announced a massive expansion of up to 50 large format stores to compete with Target, focused on grocery as well as consumer goods.
Announcements from Marshalls and J.Crew followed, demonstrating the perceived strength and value of the Canadian consumer market.
Canada is seen as a “safe” market by many retailers, used as a test market before entering into other international markets. With increased opportunity in the Canadian market, New Zealand companies would benefit from considering Canada in the same manner.
