LOS ANGELES: The United States (US) will drive wine volume growth over the next 20 years, according to research by Wine Intelligence, reports Drinks International.
The report, which was commissioned by ProWein ahead of its 27-29 March exhibition, researched areas of potential growth in the US, UK, Dutch and German markets.
Wine Intelligence forecasts that the US's 55+ age group will grow as a proportion of the adult population, driving wine growth of 50 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2030.
According to the report, the US wine market will grow from 290 million nine litre cases to over 500 million in 2030.
Senior project manager at Wine Intelligence, Paul Medder said: "In the US there is opportunity for continued penetration."
As maturing wine markets, the UK and Netherlands will follow similar paths over the coming 20 years, experiencing low growth, says the report.
While Germany's "rapidly ageing population" is expected to contribute to slight volume declines in its wine market over the next two decades.
Across all four markets, today's 35-50 year olds are forecast to be the most significant consumer group by 2030.
