LONDON: Sales of Fairtrade products in the United Kingdom exceeded £1.2 billion last year, with sales tipped to hit £2 billion this year, according to British media reports.
With the recent inclusion of gold jewellery, Fairtrade products have expanded from their traditional domain of food and drinks such as bananas, coffee, tea and chocolate.
According to media reports, CEO of retail giant Sainsbury’s Justin King believes that fruits including mangoes, pineapple and limes could be the next items to go under the Fairtrade umbrella.
Discount retailer Aldi is also eyeing a slice of the profits from Fairtrade products, and is reported to be launching a range of Fairtrade foods which it claims will be at a premium to its non-Fairtrade products, but cheaper than Fairtrade products in other supermarket chains.
