WASHINGTON: United States (US) President Barack Obama has released a proposal calling on the private sector to create a secure identity system to boost consumer security in cyberspace, Wired.com reported.
President Obama’s ‘National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace’ is aimed at getting the private sector to develop methods which will allow consumers to create a secure online identity to enable web transactions.
“The plan envisions replacing today’s reality of generally having to remember passwords for dozens of sites where consumers have already lodged their sensitive data, such as credit card numbers,” Wired.com said.
“The (US) government estimated that 11.7 million Americans were victims of some form of identity theft in the past two years, and the proposal could reduce those numbers.”
The current US administration warned however that implementation of the plan ‘would not happen overnight’ and that it could take up to five years for the ‘standardisation of policy and technology.’
