World first for Victorian dairy industry

VICTORIA: Australia has launched a unique cleaning system for dairy milking equipment, capable of achieving energy savings of nearly 75 percent.

At the launch of the Green Cleaning system, Victorian Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said the new system had enormous potential for the dairy industry.

Green Cleaning operates at low temperatures, using renewable energy for heating and re-uses cleaning chemicals.

The new system utilises the waste heat that is generated from the milk itself to heat the rinse water used for cleaning.

“The combination of these three factors makes the system unique and a world first,” Smith said in a statement.

“Farmers can make substantial savings on power bills and their use of water and chemicals as well as reducing their individual greenhouse gas emissions by around 37 tonnes per year.”

Green Cleaning for Dairies is part of a project developed with an A$467,691 grant from the Victorian Government’s Sustainability Fund.
