Sector Opportunities
Agritech
South Africa essentially has a dual agricultural economy, comprising of a well-developed commercial sector and a predominantly subsistence-orientated sector in the rural areas. New Zealand is perceived as a market leader in animal health, fencing, genetics, pasture cultivars and pasture management.
Consultancy
Opportunities exist in, but not exclusively to, training of public service workers, trade and investment, privatisation, restructuring, tourism, aquaculture and fisheries. Tourism is a major growth sector, with the government placing great hopes on the industry for continued job creation.
Engineering and Construction
The growth observed in the construction sector (i.e. the upgrade of the country’s ageing rail infrastructure and the Gautrain Rapid Rail link) is expected to continue in upcoming years. Major projects include construction of power stations to increase the country’s capacity and meet soaring electricity demand.

Oil and Gas
High value niche components and expertise used to construct refineries is produced on a small scale in New Zealand, and highly sought after in other major countries. South Africa is utilising its abundance of potential energy sources. New Zealand has world class expertise and technology in these fields and there is potential for cooperation, particularly in the field of geothermal and wind energy.
Marine
For New Zealand companies, opportunities exist for manufacturing components (i.e. motors, resin, and winches) as South Africa imports the majority of its components. South African importers and end-users have also expressed interest in joint ventures as they value New Zealand’s speciality products, technology and expertise.
Food and Beverage
A challenging manufacturing environment coupled with consumers’ demand for premium brands means; there are opportunities for New Zealand to provide high quality products and food solutions
Pharmaceuticals
The New Zealand pharmaceutical industry puts a high priority on research and development. Finished products have the potential to be well positioned in the private sector, while high quality bio-extracts can be utilised in the production of generics.
