There are around 200 industrial parks in Mexico. About 40 percent are already officially certified. Their main advantages are:
- they tend to be top-class developments thanks to strict legal requirements including water treatment, fire protection and roadways.
- they are located close to transport facilities.
- they concentrate in a single place the right infrastructure for industrial operations, such as water, electricity, telecommunications and roads and
- they have a central administration coordinating internal safety, maintenance, development and affairs of local authorities.
About 2700 businesses are already using these parks, about 40 percent of them foreign.
Mexico has also been developing more free trade zones (FTZ) that cater for manufacturing, repair, distribution and sale of merchandise.
Most major ports in Mexico have bonded areas (recinto fiscalizado) or customs agents (recinto fiscal) within them. Several states are converting their bonded areas into FTZs.
