The National Minimum Wage Commission reviews and sets the minimum wage rate by geographical area, usually annually. As of 1 January 2009, the minimum wage in Mexico ranged from US$3.70 to US$4 per day. This compares with US$58 per day in the US (based on an eight-hour day) and US$2 to US$4.80 per day in China, depending on the province.
The Mexican Labour Commission also sets specific ranges of minimum wage rates for a number of occupations. For example, in the city of Reynosa, in the state of Tamaulipas in northeast Mexico, the minimum hourly wages are:
- direct labour – US$3.24
- indirect labour – US$4.72
- supervision and engineering – US$7.69
- operational management – US$37.91
