Inventive solutions coupled with a thorough understanding of the business environment has seen New Zealand company Redesign become a sought after provider of interior architecture services in Asia.
Redesign started as a one woman consultancy, founded by managing director Jo Pennycuick, and has grown into a successful award winning company which helps businesses re-brand, upgrade their interiors and design new outlets.
Its design hub is in Christchurch with offices in Delhi and Kuwait.
Redesign's business in India is expanding steadily on the back of the reputation it earned completing the Mumbai International Airport food court, working in partnership with global airport food and beverage operator HMS Host.
Pennycuick says a decision to design and build components in New Zealand and ship them to Mumbai was expensive but it paid off in the long term.
"We incurred a lot of costs doing it that way but it gave us complete control over the quality of what we delivered. It set a benchmark and gave other potential customers in India confidence in working with us."
Redesign went on to develop more than 24 food and beverage and retail sites at the Indira Ghandi Delhi International Airport and is tendering for further refurbishment work at airports around India.
It has also partnered with management consultants Prisstine Systems on commercial design projects around India and director Abbhinav Thakshak describes the company as an "ideal example of how out-of-the-box thinking and ideas can evolve the market and open up more opportunities".
"Redesign's commitment to providing something different, not run of the mill solutions, has seen them bring new perspectives to the Indian design consultancy market and find work in a range of new markets such as aviation, infrastructure and customised mentoring of brands to enter the retail market.
"We were impressed with Redesign from the start and their commitment to deliver customised solutions for clients gave us the confidence to introduce them to bigger infrastructure companies and government agencies."
A key to Redesign's success is the considerable resources it has invested in training contractors in India.
"We insist on top quality and beautiful fine tuning and finishing. We spent a lot of time working alongside contractors and project managers showing them what we expect and implementing quality control systems. We now have a base of staff in market who can deliver what we want," says Pennycuick.
Given the excellent growth prospects for the company in India, Pennycuick says the company is talking to tertiary education providers in Christchurch about the possibility of bringing contractors from India to New Zealand for block courses in construction techniques.
"Indians are keen to learn and there is huge respect for people who are willing to teach them. We pride ourselves on making a long term commitment to the markets we are in and being true to our word. My clients know that if I say I'll do something, it will get done."
Redesign's team of designers has completed airport terminal fit outs in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, India, Singapore and Malaysia and also provides design services globally for the hospitality, retail and housing markets.
In Vietnam, Redesign's business is growing rapidly with the company designing and constructing food and beverage retail sites at airports and doing design and fit out for fast food chains including Domino's Pizza.
In the Middle East, Redesign is designing food and beverage outlets in
Dubai, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, high end housing in Kuwait, and a string of smart retail stores owned by some of the region's - and the world's - biggest football clubs.
