Using communications technology

Singapore’s Economist Intelligence Unit 2009 e-readiness ranking is sixth. E-readiness  is a measure of the quality of a country’s information and communications technology infrastructure and the ability of its consumers, businesses and governments to use ICT to their benefit.

Singapore’s high population density, and 100 percent urbanisation rate, have made the provision of the infrastructure required to wire the nation relatively easy. Almost every home has a fixed telephone line.

The mobile subscription rate currently stands at more than 100 percent with new demand in recent years being driven by upgrades.

Technologies: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).

As of April 2009 there were more than 4.9 million broadband internet subscriptions. Almost every school and public library is equipped with personal computers with broadband access. The majority of those accessing the internet do so for communication purposes, although downloading music, playing video games and e-commerce are all gaining in popularity.

Singapore has the world’s first nationwide broadband network, SingaporeONE.
