The relationship between New Zealand and Singapore is one of the most long-established and closest in Asia.
The relationship dates back to well before Singapore’s independence from Malaysia in 1965. During World War II, the New Zealand air force played a significant role in Singapore’s air defence.
Due to this close and historical relationship, Singapore provides New Zealand with valuable insights into the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN) thinking and processes.
The two countries share similar views on international and regional trade issues and initiatives.
