Success for NZ wine in Germany

Saint Clair and Brancott Estate (Pernod Ricard NZ) have been awarded Top White Wine from the New World together with one South African wine. Each year wine publisher Meininger selects the Top 100 wines on the German market, this year from 600 wines handed in. Criteria are that they sell at least 10,000 bottles a year and offer a high quality product with a good quality-price ratio. Image, marketing, authenticity and design are also considered. 75% of the awarded wines are sold in specialist retail, 25% came from wine shelves of supermarkets.

Leading in the red wine category is traditionally Italy but it is losing grounds to Spain, which is becoming increasingly important and French wines re-gaining grounds. These three countries account for nearly 80% of the awarded reds, three Australian wines made it into the top reds. Germany and Austria dominate the white wine category. The strongest price category for the awarded wines is 8-15 Euros (50%), 30% sell for 5-8 Euros and one Italian wine sells for 145 Euros.
