F&B Sustainability Report for Taiwan: November 2011

The growing importance of sustainability as a market driver in some of New Zealand’s food and beverage export markets has led the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to prepare a quarterly report for business people highlighting trends and issues in key markets.

Summary:

  • Draft nutrition act: Taiwan’s Department of Health (DOH) has proposed a draft nutrition act requiring that meals for children, including school lunches meet certain nutritional standards.
  • Proposed regulations on melamine: The DOH is currently consulting on a proposed amendment to the "Sanitation Standards of Food Utensils, Containers and Packages" which would limit the amount of melamine in food utensils, containers and packages to 2.5 parts per million (ppm).
  • Survey attributes Taiwan’s high carbon footprint to meat consumption: A survey conducted by Uni-Survey Link Marketing Research and Consulting has found Taiwan to be ranked 17th in the world and ninth in Asia in terms of its carbon footprint and claims that a significant source of carbon emissions is meat consumption.
