F&B sustainability report for Poland: January 2011

The growing importance of sustainability as a market driver in some of New Zealand’s food and beverage export markets has led the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to prepare a quarterly report for business people highlighting trends and issues in Poland.

Summary

  • Poles feel animal cloning for food unsafe: In a survey of EU countries
conducted recently by Eurobarometer, 70 percent of the Polish public said they were worried about cloning animals for food products. The meat and milk industry is however abstaining from taking a position on this matter stating that at this time it would not be cost effective to try and develop cloning technology for farms.
  • The Eurobarometer report also shows that Poles are worried about additives in food – in particular, chemical residues and pollutants.
Polish meat cluster formed: 8 big meat producers came together in the second half of 2010 to form the Polish Meat Cluster. This is the biggest consolidation of producers in recent times and is a move to counter what is seen as the most prominent problem in meat production - the fragmentation of farms and facilities. One of the first plans of the group is to introduce a quality mark for pig meat produced with special care for the animals’ wellbeing.
  • Poland wins court case with European Commission on genetically modified foods: the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg has ruled in Poland’s favour annulling a European Commission’s decision penalising Poland for implementing a law which was not in line with EU policy.
