Marine products market in Spain

A large percentage of the Spanish population lives close to the water. Spain is also the second largest tourist destination in the world. Water sports are rapidly gaining popularity.

The ratio of boat ownership in Spain is 0.5 boats per 100 head of population. The European average is 1.6:100. Consequently, as per capita incomes rise, significant growth in boat ownership is expected, although restricted mooring space is a major issue.

Imports of pleasure boats are dominated by the United States, which accounts for around half the import market, followed by France, Italy and Australia. Most imported boats come with the motor attached. Spanish boat manufacturers have to import motors for their boats, with the customer usually choosing the engines.

Getting your product into market

Distribution typically runs from manufacturer or importer to authorised dealers and boatyards. Boatyards are generally locally or regionally based. New Zealand marine companies should ensure they are satisfied with the performance and coverage of any Spanish representative before granting any exclusivity.

Volume producers may consider possible production options within the European Union to reduce lead time to market, tariff and marginal costs.

Regulations

The Spanish tariff regime is in line with other European Union countries. Tariffs typically range from zero to 13 percent.

Opportunities

  • The Americas Cup in Valencia in 2007 brought a large amount of local media attention on New Zealand’s extensive presence. New Zealand marine companies can benefit from this attention to promote their products to Spanish yachting circles.
