English is the second language in the Philippines and is considered the language of commerce.
Most Filipinos read and write in English and it should not be difficult to communicate with local business people. However, remember to speak slowly, as Filipinos are not used to the New Zealand accent.
Listen to your local partners and use what they say as part of your decision making processes.
Managing business meetings
The use of business cards is a must. There are no special ways of handing over cards unlike some other Asian countries.
A long sleeve shirt and tie are acceptable dress for most business meetings especially when meeting with Filipino Chinese businessmen. A suit is best for more formal meetings with top management or evening cocktails and dinner. Western style business and smart casual attire for women is acceptable for most business meetings.
