New Zealand wineries are clubbing together to enter the Indian wine market. Indian suppliers currently dominate the local market. But the managing director of Hunter’s Wines, Jane Hunter, says Indian consumers have a huge interest in wines from the new world and from New Zealand, in particular.
“Couple this with the feeling that now’s the right time to be opening up exports to India, and things are looking very positive.
“The market for wine is undoubtedly still small by international standards but it is growing.
“In the first instance, the New Zealand wines will be distributed to fine dining restaurants and premium hotels.”
Nelson-based India export company InDEX co-ordinates market visits to India for small New Zealand wine companies.
InDEX’s Tina-Maree Thomas and Jenny Woods represent the New Zealand wine portfolio and visit each state in India every 12 weeks.
They co-ordinate wine tastings, carry out trade visits and build relationships with new customers.
A partnership with United Breweries provides opportunities for distribution throughout India, ensuring growth in supply and demand for the wines.
The first wine order to India reached Nhava Sheva port, north of Mumbai, in October 2007.
