The Escalator service funded by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) provides specialist skills and assistance to raise equity funding or complete a strategic relationship that may help your business expand, diversify or commercialise a product or service.

The Escalator team and a consortium of leading private sector advisors, can assess and give feedback on your company's financing growth needs and potential for investment.

Assessments

An assessment of the investment potential of your business or concept. Assessment application forms are available on the Escalator website.

Investment specific workshops

Each year Escalator runs workshops throughout New Zealand to help businesses get ready for investment. Workshop topics include how to make your opportunity ready for investment, what are the investor needs and deal structuring with current case studies used for discussion.

Deal brokering

Escalator provides assistance to select opportunities to either attempt to raise capital of up to $5 million, and/or to negotiate strategic partnerships, licensing and joint ventures.

Please note: Escalator is a service funded by NZTE. NZTE and the Escalator service providers do not invest directly in the businesses or entrepreneurs that use this service. They provide an opportunity for participants to develop the skills needed to access investment opportunities.

Who is eligibile for the Escalator service?

All businesses and entrepreneurs who need to raise funds (up to $5 million) to expand, diversify or commercialise a new concept are eligible for assistance.

Through the application process, companies will need to supply evidence of a genuine need for funding to take their idea further. Priority is given to projects that offer strong potential for growth and investment return.

NZTE recommends you complete training through your local Enterprise Training Provider or attend Escalator workshops before seeking assistance under the Escalator service.

Service costs and fees

The evaluation and support services are underwritten by NZTE and are provided to clients at no cost. A success fee applies of up to 6 percent for capital raised. This is payable to the broker only after capital has been raised or a non-equity deal has been completed.

Escalator will contact you to conduct an assessment of your investment opportunity and/or book you directly into a workshop.

How Escalator has helped New Zealand businesses

From November 2003 to June 2009, Escalator has:

  • had more than 2,500 attendees to Escalator workshops
  • assessed more than 1,800 businesses and assisted more than 300 businesses with deal preparation expertise
  • raised over $90 million of capital for more than 100 firms, and assisted several firms to complete significant new licensing or strategic partnerships
  • completed deals ranging in value from $95,000 to $5 million
  • helped businesses at various stages of their growth cycle (seed to expansion) and represented all sectors – including ICT, food and beverage, creative and services, manufacturing and biotechnology.
